Autumn

If you are caring for your own lawn what are the best things to do for your lawn in autumn?

Your grass will still be growing until the temperature drops but growth will slow. You’ll still need to mow, albeit less frequently, and you can think about raising the height of the cut as we get closer to winter.

Aerate your lawn, using a fork for smaller lawns or a machine for larger lawns. This will relieve compaction, improve drainage and allow more air into the root system leading to a healthier stronger lawn ready for winter.

Scarify lawns to reduce the build-up of dead grass matter (known as thatch), roots and moss which can prevent water and nutrients getting into the soil and roots.

Also clear the lawn of leaves and debris. As leaves start to fall from the trees use a light rake or brush to keep the lawn clear.

Depending on the wear and tear your lawn has had over the previous months you may want to overseed the lawn in early autumn. This will germinate ahead of winter and fill in any sparse or thinner areas.

If your lawn has become uneven top dressing can help even out any low areas. Brush top soil (ideally a new bag from garden centre) into the lawn surface and add lawn seed to help fill in any thin areas.
