Spring

If you are caring for your own lawn what are the best things you can do for your lawn in spring?

Spring is a great time to work on your lawn to avoid bigger renovation jobs later in the year and a good time to remove any moss that may have built up following periods of drought or waterlogging.

Initially moss should be removed by ‘scarification’ and on small lawns this can be done by hand with a spring rake. On larger lawns a mechanical scarifier will be needed.

You could also use a moss killer and when the moss blackens after two or three weeks scarify your lawn to remove it. If your grass is of poor health, I would recommend a combination of moss killer & fertiliser.

To remain moss-free your grass must stay healthy. Avoid acidic soil conditions, feed your lawn regularly, ensure the soil is aerated and don’t mow the grass too short.

And it’s time to start regular mowing. Once a week is about right.
