Summer

If you are caring for your own lawn what are the best things you can do for your lawn in summer?

Regular mowing is essential when your grass is growing, your mower blade should be sharp and cut properly so not to stress the grass. Take no more than one third of the height of the grass on any one cut. In dry periods it’s recommended to leave the grass to grow slightly longer to help trap moisture by reducing evaporation and help encourage deeper root growth.

Should you water your lawn? Usually the answer is no as we live in a wet country, but even we get periods of drought. If the grass is still green but starting to show signs of stress it’s time to water. Water evenly in the early morning or evening as the water is more likely to soak in. Remember to follow any local regulations when using water in summer.

If after watering your lawn still turns brown or straw coloured, there’s no need to worry. Established, well-maintained lawns will invariably recover once the rains return. Good maintenance at other times of the year, including aeration and appropriate feeding will help your lawns rooting and its ability to withstand and recover from periods of drought.

How do I treat weeds? If you only have a few Broadleaf weeds (common lawn weeds) take them out by hand, ensuring you remove the entire root. If you have a lawn full of weeds or unremovable weeds such as clover, you can use a suitable selective herbicide.
